CAPSTONE (Cislunar Autonomous Positioning System Technology Operations and Navigation Experiment) is a pioneering 12‑unit CubeSat sent to test the unique near‑rectilinear halo orbit planned for the Lunar Gateway. Launched on 28 June 2022, the spacecraft demonstrates orbital stability, autonomy, and a new navigation method that measures its position relative to NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter—all without relying on Earth‑based tracking.

This mission is a key step in preparing for Artemis operations and long‑term lunar exploration.
