Russia's Mir Space Station was in orbit for over 15 years. The first element of the station was launched on February 20, 1986. It was a third-generation Russian station. During the years Mir was orbiting earth, it was home to people from more than a dozen countries including Afghanistan, Austria, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Japan, Syria, United Kingdom, and the United States.
