The First Lunar Landing

Apollo 11’s goal was simple and audacious:

Land humans on the Moon and return them safely to Earth.
After entering lunar orbit at 76 hours, Armstrong and Aldrin moved into the Lunar Module for descent. At 4:18 p.m. EDT, Eagle touched down on the Moon. Hours later, the world watched live as Neil Armstrong stepped onto the surface at 10:56 p.m. EDT, declaring:
“That’s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.”
Aldrin joined him minutes later. In just 2½ hours on the surface, the crew:
•     Collected 47 pounds of lunar samples
•     Deployed scientific experiments
•     Photographed the terrain, equipment, and each other

Return to Earth

After lifting off from the Moon on July 21, Eagle docked with Columbia at 128 hours. A single midcourse correction guided them home. Despite shifting weather, splashdown was smooth, with the Command Module landing in the Pacific at 12:50 p.m. EDT on July 24.
