NASA decided a more modern logo was in order and switched to the NASA logo, nicknamed the "worm," a red, stylized rendering of the letters N-A-S-A.

The third official NASA insignia is a modern, simplistic emblem. The emblem is rectangular with approximate dimensions of 1.5 inches high by four inches long with rounded corners. It features a white fully embroidered background with flame red continuous script lettering which simply reads "NASA". This emblem has been replaced with the NASA vector design as the official logo.

The NASA logo (worm) has been retired from official use since 1992.
